Singing out loud is the palpable form joy takes when there’s so much of it in you, your body can’t contain it anymore. So, it bursts free in poetic melody.
Often, you have little control over the inner songbird. Whether you’re a good singer or utterly unexceptional, it shows up with the vigour of a opera singer and demands fun. Should you oblige, you’re bestowed with pure elation that multiplies with each chorus.
At times, you don’t even notice when you’ve slipped into song. It’s a sign of a good mood. More dopamine, less cortisol. A small act of self love that’s so accessible, its impact on our emotions is almost astonishing.
But singing out loud doesn’t always have to be the sequel to high spirits. Like a ouija board, you can invoke them with your harmonious chirping if you ever find yourself spiritless. When you’re feeling blue and dejected, just put on some tunes and surrender to the melody.
Just like how you sing at the bar when sipping a drink or burst into song in the car because you’re happy, you can summon a good mood and will yourself into doing something mundane. Hum and whistle when lifting weights at the gym, trill and tune when shopping for groceries and sing away frustrations you’re carrying.
If like me, you’re not a sweet sounding canary, don’t let that hold you back. There’s no pressure to impress. Only the calling to have fun. So belt out the tunes and have a ball being bad. And each time you catch yourself singing, sense the unbridled joy within you. And each time you seek joy that’s evading you, turn on the music and sing along.
Love this!
